Meet the Green Sisterhood!

Amanda

I hail from just north of Washington, DC. My "green" interests tend toward being more environmentally friendly in suburbia, and how to raise eco-conscious kids. My current household is my husband, daughter and two cats, with grown stepchildren making guest appearances.

After 15 years of life in Hong Kong’s fast lane, I ditched my unashamedly ‘Sex and the City’ lifestyle, packed up my rescue kitties, and moved lock, stock and Louboutins across the world to take up the challenge of restoring a derelict homestead in Eastern Europe. With no real gardening experience, knowing no-one in my adopted country and not speaking the local language, me (and my ever growing band of rescue cats) are singlehandedly renovating an old stone house while grappling with a half-acre organic vegetable garden and tiny vineyard in an anti-consumerist bid for self-sufficiency.

I’m a long-time organic gardener and recently moved to an 1836 farmhouse on 3.5 acres in Vermont. For many years I was satisfied with a community garden plot  and a few perennials, but over time the peaceful solitude and creative joy of gardening became something I craved in my daily life.  My fiancĂ© and I are developing our property using the principles of Permaculture, learning as we go. We aim to build a harmonious, productive, and beautiful homestead, develop skills that increase our self-sufficiency, live creatively, and reduce our impact on the planet.

I am a woman in my early 30’s living in Lake Erie wine country.  I am raising three girls and one seriously silly Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  My husband and I have a mixed political marriage but sustainability and self reliance are two of the areas where our beliefs align.  I planted my first vegetable garden when I was seven or eight and have been digging in the dirt as long as I can remember.  I’ve learned most of what I know from trial and error and word of mouth from older family members. My formal educational background is in history, art and psychology.  I work as a freelance artist and stay at home parent.  I’ve also been battling the effects of multiple sclerosis since I was twenty years old though I’ve only recently been properly diagnosed.
